Mountain Airedale Terriers

Mountain Airedale Terriers

Living with Mountain Airedale Terriers – – – In this video which I did a few years ago, you can see our big boy Oakley (99 Lbs., he lived too short a life, & left us just before he was 11yrs old) and Annie, when she was a puppy. Yes, having be lucky enough to have owned both the standard size Airedale & the larger Oorang or Mountain Airedale, my personal opinion is, except for size, the larger Airedales have exactly the same intelligent, fun-loving, carefree personality as the standard size Airedales.
For expressing my opinion on the larger/ Mountain Airedales, I’ve been banished from one Facebook group and always seem to rile up the hard-core, breed standard Airedale terrier folks.

Large Airedale Terrier Popularity

San Diego Larger Airedale Terrier

Many consider the larger Airedale Terrier the ideal dog. These larger Airedales are known as Oorang Airedales, Mountain Airedales and just larger Airedale Terriers.

The best of these larger Airedales are AKC registered, but, because they exceed the currently recognized Airedale Terrier breed standards, they cannot be entered into any AKC sanctioned events. Read more

Large Airedale Breeder Interview

Large Airedale Breeder

This is an interview with a breeder of a large Airedale Terriers. Most of the Airedale terriers at this breeders facility range from about 50 pounds on the low side to 122 pounds! Sorry about the sound quality, the camera picked up the motor noise of the gimbal that I was using, and I just couldn’t get it out of the audio track.

These Airedale terriers are way over the AKC standards for the Airedale line. This means that you would not be able to enter these large Airedale Terriers in any AKC sanctioned dog show. Now, with that said from having owned both the regular Airedale Terriers and the larger (sometimes called Oorang Airedales or Mountain Airedales) Airedales, I think the larger Airedale is the ideal size Airedale. Black Airedale Terrier

The black Airedale Terrier

Quite a few local Airedale Terrier owners that I’ve talked to here in San Diego, didn’t seem to realize that there was an all black Airedale Terrier. But, the reality is that they have been around for quite some time. Although not recognized by the AKC, through registration into their system, the fact remains that they exist and have exactly the same characteristics as the standard black and tan Airedales.  Black Airedale Terrier *CORRECTION to video -The breeder has been breeding Airedales for 33 years!

So, if you love Airedale Terriers, and can appreciate and all black Airedale Terrier, you definitely have an opportunity to stand out from the crowd by owning one of these fun-loving intelligent animals. Read more

Larger Airedale Terriers

Larger Airedale Terriers talking

My two larger Airedale Terriers, Annie and Oakley. Airedale Terriers are great, perhaps the greatest dog ever, but, the larger Airedale Terrier is definitely the king of the Terriers!

Airedales weigh approximately 50-80 pounds, being active and agile enough to perform well, while not too small to function as a physical deterrent, retriever or hunter. Some breeders have produced larger Airedale Terriers, such as the ‘Oorang Airedale’, developed in the 1920s. Read more

Larger Airedales

Larger Airedales

The larger Airedale Terriers are known as Mountain Airedales or Oorang Airedales.

Even though these larger Airedale Terriers could be AKC registered, because they are so far beyond the breed standard measurements, they would not be allowed to enter any AKC sanctioned dog shows. But, how many of you were considering purchasing or larger Airedale Terrier to enter into dog shows anyway?

Personally, I feel that the larger Airedale Terrier is the ideal size companion dog. My male dog in this video is Oakley and he currently weighs in at 99 pounds! The smaller female, Annie, weighs in at 55 pounds. I realize there are a lot of detractors out there who pooh-pooh the larger Airedale Terrier, but the fact is that there are many who believe the AKC should formalize standards for the larger Airedale breed.  Read more

Airedale Puppy Training

Airedale Puppy Training – Airedale Terrier puppy training

Airedale Terriers are very smart dogs and therefore  usually easy to train. This video shows the training of a three-month-old Airedale Terrier puppy.

My personal observations about training and/or playing with in Airedale Terrier is that they do bore easily. Therefore, I would suggest not to linger on a single command for too long and have your training sessions at least once a day, always with multiple commands and plenty of treats. Read more

Airedale Terrier Grooming

Airedale Terrier Grooming

This is a good video on trimming your Airedale Terrier.

I’ve always been a do-it-yourselfer when it comes to grooming my two Mountain Airedale Terriers. Mostly,DIY grooming is out of necessity because I know that neither of my two Airedale’s would put up with professional grooming.

I think if you want to bring your hairdo and for professional grooming you should start when they’re a puppy so they get used to the experience. On the other hand, looking at videos like this, that go over the entire procedure, and getting a good set of electronic clippers, it’s really relatively easy to do this yourself. Read more

Airedale Terrier UAV – San Diego Drone Photography

Airedale Terrier UAV

Videotaping in 4K resolution, my two mountain Airedale Terriers in a local San Diego schoolyard.

My male mountain Airedale Terrier is eight years old and weighs 92 pounds. My female mountain Airedale Terrier is 15 months old and weighs 46 pounds. The Airedales had been with me a number of times when I’m operating this aerial drone, and so have become quite used to it, and now really don’t pay much attention to it. Read more

Mountain Airedales

Mountain Airedale Terriers

San Diego, California – Our 7 year old Mountain Airedale with our new 8 week old Mountain Airedale puppy.

The Airedale Terrier, like most Terriers, has been bred to hunt independently. As a result, the dog is very intelligent, independent, strong-minded, stoic, and can sometimes be stubborn.

Airedales can be an excellent choice for a family dog. Airedales can do well with cats and other small animals, especially when they are raised with them. Read more
