Airedale Puppy Tail Docking
Airedale Puppy Tail Docking
Two day old Airedale Terriers at the Vet for tail docking and Dewclaw removal.
This is what the AKC says on the subject of tail docking and dewclaw removal: Many owners of specific breeds wish to maintain their dog’s historic practical function by having their puppy’s ears cropped, tails docked, or dewclaws removed. While some unfamiliar with the breeds believe that this is purely aesthetic, these procedures actually enhance the dog’s ability to perform the tasks it is meant to do. Read more

Airedale Newborn Pups
Airedale Newborn Pups
I guess for Annie, feeding nine newborn pups was a bit much. On the second day, she would actually walk out or hesitate even walking into the whelping area. So, I decided to intervene on nature’s way, and feed the pups about every two hours, but not all at once. I’ve been keeping the pups in a separate blanket lined container and taking five out for the first shift and then the other four for the second shift.

Annie just before 1st. pup & 1st. just out & Mom cleaning it up. 3 pups so far . . . . It’s really something to see Airedales born!!!
This was the first time that my wife and I were at or participated in puppy birthing. Prior to this, Oakley our 99 pound Mountain Airedale was the sire to two litters here in San Diego. Naturally, all that consisted of was having a female Airedale come over for a couple days. Read more
Red Airedale Terrier
Red Airedale Terrier
Do you remember the first Ford automobiles that were produced? You could have any color you want as long as it was black! Well, many people believe the Airedale Terrier is just black and tan. Actually, there are all-black Airedales ( view my video of a black Airedale( https://www.airedale-terriers-oorang.com/airedale-terriers/black-airedale-terrier.html ) and also red Airedales!
As I said before, having owned three black and tan Airedales I’m partial toward the traditional coloring. But, with that said, and even with the fact that the AKC does not recognize the red or the black Airedale, I don’t see why if someone wants one of these Airedales they shouldn’t have one. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
Plus, I really think the main attraction of the Airedale is not the coloring so much as it is the personality and traits of the breed itself.
Of all the Airedales I saw at this breeders facility, Eric the red Airedale was not only one of the largest Airedales there, he had the standard fun-loving, happy demeanor as is common with all the Airedale terriers. Also, just look at his face in the video, how can you not love this big fun-loving animal? Read more
Larger Airedale Terriers
Larger Airedale Terriers talking
My two larger Airedale Terriers, Annie and Oakley. Airedale Terriers are great, perhaps the greatest dog ever, but, the larger Airedale Terrier is definitely the king of the Terriers!
Airedales weigh approximately 50-80 pounds, being active and agile enough to perform well, while not too small to function as a physical deterrent, retriever or hunter. Some breeders have produced larger Airedale Terriers, such as the ‘Oorang Airedale’, developed in the 1920s. Read more
Larger Airedales
Larger Airedales
The larger Airedale Terriers are known as Mountain Airedales or Oorang Airedales.
Even though these larger Airedale Terriers could be AKC registered, because they are so far beyond the breed standard measurements, they would not be allowed to enter any AKC sanctioned dog shows. But, how many of you were considering purchasing or larger Airedale Terrier to enter into dog shows anyway?
Personally, I feel that the larger Airedale Terrier is the ideal size companion dog. My male dog in this video is Oakley and he currently weighs in at 99 pounds! The smaller female, Annie, weighs in at 55 pounds. I realize there are a lot of detractors out there who pooh-pooh the larger Airedale Terrier, but the fact is that there are many who believe the AKC should formalize standards for the larger Airedale breed. Airedale Terrier Summer Safety Tips
Airedale Terrier Summer Safety Tips
When summer comes around, you have to put a little more thought into ensuring the safety of your dog.
My Airedales like to drink a lot of water every day, and that’s especially true after a long hike. But, it’s important to also bring water with you so they can have a drink along the way. I always trim my dogs coats in the spring so that they are much cooler through the spring and summer seasons. Here in the Western United States you also have to keep on the lookout for rattlesnakes. Rattlesnakes are usually out early in the morning and later in the day as the sun starts to set. They’re not going to attack you or your dogs but they sure will bite your dogs if curiosity gets the dogs too close. Read more
