What to feed your Airedale Terrier

Here I’m talking about Airedale Terriers, but, believe my opinions on proper feeding your dog, can apply to most other dog breeds.

With recent headlines like:

It may well pay to home-cook for your Airedale. Why not try to insure your Airedales health, happiness, and longevity?

To ensure that my two mountain Airedales are getting a well-balanced meal, when I prepare meals for them these custom cooked home meals just provide a topping for their normal high-quality kibble.

I usually alternate lean beef one week, and lean turkey the next week. As far as what vegetables to use, I would suggest that you first start off by just cooking the lean beef or turkey as supplement to their kibble. Do this for at least a couple days, and then add just one new vegetable. See how that goes over with your dog for the next two days before adding another new vegetable. Keep doing this until you have a good mixture of at least three or four different vegetables. If you see your dog develop diarrhea or an upset stomach eliminate that vegetable from your ingredient list.

Also, I would suggest before adding any new vegetable, you do a Google search to make sure that this vegetable is ok for your dog. I would suggest adding around a maximum of 10% vegetables per your home cooked meal supplement. I cook the meals to last at least two days, or for my Airedales, at least four feedings. I feed my dogs twice a day; in the morning, and early evening.

I also want to say, that even though the ingredients that I use, from the meat to the vegetables, are all for human consumption, be sure to cook them, especially the meat. I would never feed my Airedales any raw meat.

When I cook I’m usually using virgin olive oil or coconut oil, both of which are very good for your dog. Keep in mind, I don’t use these as full meals, just to subsidize their regular kibble.

If you look at some of my photos here you see that I keep an eye out for sales and so usually purchase the ground meat in either three, five, 10, or 20 pound packages. Personally, not counting your time in preparation but just the cost of food, I think this is actually less expensive than buying premium canned dog food. Thus, I know that since my meat and vegetables are made for human consumption, it is far better than buying products made for animal consumption.

I understand many people may not have the time to do this, and so I would suggest you might want to consider just doing it at first for your dog’s weekend meals.

President Roosevelt claimed that “An Airedale can do anything any other dog can do and then lick the other dog, if he has to.”

1949 marked the peak of the Airedales’ popularity in the USA, ranked 20th out of 110 breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: The Airedale Terrier, like most terriers, has been bred to hunt independently. As a result, the dog is very intelligent, independent, strong-minded, stoic, and can sometimes be stubborn. If children and Airedales are both trained correctly, Airedales can be an excellent choice for a family dog. Airedales can do well with cats and other small animals, especially when they are raised with them. They are also very loyal to their owners.
