Airedale Terrier DNA Testing
Airedale Terrier DNA Testing
Well I’m sure we’re all familiar with the DNA testing to determine one’s heritage and where your forbearers originated from.

But, also the fact is that for certain groups DNA test can also determine whether you have the genes for certain specific diseases. For the general public the tests that are widely available are just for determining lineage.
Now you might be asking yourself where my going with this, and I just wanted to say for dogs especially specific purebred dogs, there’s a big enough database to be pretty accurate in not only determining the lineage but also being very precise in determining whether your pet carries a specific gene for certain breed-specific ailments.
With the AKC registered dogs, there’s not much that can be gained from a DNA test just for lineage. This is because the AKC gives you a certificate when your dog is registered showing you the exact lineage of your pet. But, with that said there are several companies that also test for breed-specific ailments.
Airedale Terrier Coronado Sunset
Airedale Terrier Coronado Sunset
This is mid-January 2020 on Coronado Island just behind the Hotel Del. Annie and Teddy are both larger Airedale Terriers, and with Teddy being just nine months old, it’s his first time to see the beach or the ocean.
What would you do to protect your Airedale Terrier?
I try to take my two Airedale terriers out on a hike, park, walk in town and around town, at least six days a week.
Keeping in mind the Boy Scout’s saying of being prepared, and having had a few close calls and one actual attack on my prior Airedale Terrier, I try to be prepared to protect my dogs should the unexpected occur.
On yesterday’s hike with Annie and Teddy as we were going up the Cowles Mountain trail, a guy was coming down with his large dog off leash. As he got to about 10 feet from us he grabbed his dogs collar and hung on to it as we passed each other. Then, when he was a little farther down the trail I looked back and saw he released his dog again, as they were continuing down the trail. Read more
California Airedale Terrier Sunrise Hike
17 years I’ve be hiking up this (Cowles Mtn.) mountain with Airedales. We have taken in many great sunsets over the Pacific, but until December 12th., we never did a sunrise hike. This is our larger Airedale Terrier sunrise hike on Cowles Mountain in San Diego California.
These larger Airedales are also known as Mountain Airedales because of their size. But, they certainly look forward to and enjoy all our mountain hikes. Read more

One week old Airedale terriers
Yes, yesterday afternoon to be precise, Annie’s pups and Annie celebrated the pups one week old birthday.
Also, I’d like to report that Annie is now back on 100% all-natural feeding schedule. Sometimes she might feed for just 50 minutes and at other times it’s gone over 2 1/2 hours. On the big feeding schedules, the puppies are usually snoozed out for three to over four hours before it’s time to eat again! Read more
Large Airedale Breeder Interview
Large Airedale Breeder
This is an interview with a breeder of a large Airedale Terriers. Most of the Airedale terriers at this breeders facility range from about 50 pounds on the low side to 122 pounds! Sorry about the sound quality, the camera picked up the motor noise of the gimbal that I was using, and I just couldn’t get it out of the audio track.
These Airedale terriers are way over the AKC standards for the Airedale line. This means that you would not be able to enter these large Airedale Terriers in any AKC sanctioned dog show. Now, with that said from having owned both the regular Airedale Terriers and the larger (sometimes called Oorang Airedales or Mountain Airedales) Airedales, I think the larger Airedale is the ideal size Airedale. Quite a few local Airedale Terrier owners that I’ve talked to here in San Diego, didn’t seem to realize that there was an all black Airedale Terrier. But, the reality is that they have been around for quite some time. Although not recognized by the AKC, through registration into their system, the fact remains that they exist and have exactly the same characteristics as the standard black and tan Airedales.
