The Airedale Terrier is named after the river Aire, which runs through the surrounding valleys that this breed first originated from in Yorkshire England. The area was said to have a bigger problem with rats than usual so these larger dogs begin to become the Terrier of choice with the locals. The Airedale Terrier usually lives to be around 13 years old but they are known to suffer from genetic defects including problems with their hips and eyes.
Capt. Walter Lingo , of LaRue, Ohio , developed the Oorang Airedale strain. The name came from a line of bench champions, headed by King Oorang 11, a dog which was said to have been the finest utility dog. King could retrieve waterfowl and upland game, tree raccoons , drive cattle and sheep , and bay mountain lions, bears and wolves.
The Airedale Terrier loves to run and romp. This breed is not well-suited for apartment living. It needs space with a secure backyard being ideal. Lots of exercise – both physical and mental – is necessary to keep this pup from growing restless and potentially destructive. Airedale Terriers need long daily walks and will appreciate games of fetch.
Airedales have wonderful dispositions and are easily trained. The Airedale Terrier, the largest member of the terrier group, is known to admirers as the King of Terriers. They have broad versatility, intelligence, and unswerving loyalty.
