California Airedale Puppies 4 Weeks Old

Yesterday was the puppies four week old birthday! Annie, the Mom, had nine puppies, three females and six males.
Of the nine puppies, we only had three females. Here are their photos, from left to right, the colors are: yellow, red and purple.
The birthing pen, was left open so any could enter and exit any time she wanted. To keep the puppies in we put a small corrugated plastic separator between the gates, so Annie could just step over this to enter, but the puppies couldn’t get over it to get out.

When the puppies were 3 1/2 weeks old, the first puppy managed to climb over this gate. So, I increased the height by a couple of inches, and that worked until yesterday. I cannot just keep increasing the height of the entry gate, because Annie would then have to jump over it if it was much higher and I don’t think she would do it in her feeding situation and also because she might step on some of the puppies on the other side.

So, after the last puppy escape, I removed the gates entirely and now have to actually manually open and close the gate to let Annie in and out. The pen that I’m using is a playpen type that used for children mostly, but also used for animals. It’s really great because each one of the sections can be snapped together and then moved at different angles to create a different shape enclosure.

We actually have two of the six panel playpens. We use one to move the puppies into while we clean up and change the bedding in the first one.

Also, just about three days ago we put color Velcro collars on each one of the puppies so we can easily identify them and note their individual progress.

In just four more weeks, when the puppies reach eight weeks old, they’ll all be going to new forever homes. It certainly will be sad to see them leave, but I’m sure this will be offset by seeing the pleasure of their new human parents when they pick up their new furry family member!
