Who could resist playing with a cute looking Airedale Terrier puppy? With the new year almost upon us, have you been thinking about a cute little furry puppy companion? There is just something about the Airedale Terrier that draws you into them. Perhaps, is their standard black and brown coloring. This color scheme is very similar to a large number of teddy bears that many of us had as children growing up. They have been called “the King of Terriers” and that says a lot. All terriers are killers–that’s NOT a knock, they are SUPPOSED to attack and kill game. At one time, they were THE police dog–do you know WHY they fell out of favor? Unlike German Shepherds, who took their place, they had a bitch of a time getting this breed to break off the attack on command–once they taste blood, they are all over it.

One of my friends just lost her medium sized dog with that dog’s “pal”, and Airedale, who tore her up. Most terrier breeders will tell you in a heartbeat, that terriers just don’t get along with other dogs–again, not they are supposed to. They are fighters, and early breeders mixed em with the English Bulldog to get the pit bull TERRIER.

People are very naive when they claim “it is all how you raise them”; that’s just not true. That’s like saying you have to train a cat to kill a mouse–bull. This is a serious breed, but do be careful if you get one. If you insist, be careful if you want a second dog to “mix the sex”–have your big Airedale with a female of whatever breed your second dog is. Two females, or the very worst, two males–and one of them is a terrier of any kind, and you WILL have trouble, like my friend just found out when old Mrs. Airedale killed the other dog. Love em if you want, but don’t be a fool either.

Well, with that said, and being on our fourth Airedale Terrier, perhaps I’ve been very lucky, but I can say as far as small animals go, and other dogs who may threaten and Airedale or its owner, the Airedale Terrier will not back down! I understand that there’s a number of Airedale Terriers used in the Midwest the hunt cougars and black bears, that should give you some idea of their fearlessness.

But, on the other end of the spectrum, I’ve never seen any other dog breed act as friendly or goofy with their adopted family and playing with children in general. If you’re concerned about the safety of your family, the Airedale Terrier will definitely be your best alarm and natural defense.

When someone rings my doorbell, my 99 pound mountain Airedale Terrier always runs to the front door barking. when I get to the front door to open it, no one is ever standing near the front doorbell but there always back about 8 to 10 feet.

For sure, if anyone tried to force their way in the front door, without hesitation, there would be contending with a 99 pound package of muscle connected to a large set of very long and sharp teeth!
