San Diego Best Dog Hiking

San Diego Best Dog Hiking

larger Airedale Terriers - San Diego Best Dog Hiking

larger Airedale Terriers Barker Way trail

The Cowles Mountain trail that starts at Barker Way is perhaps the best San Diego dog hiking trail. After being closed since mid-March for the coronavirus, Cowles Mountain hiking trails opened up about two weeks ago.

My two larger Airedale Terriers are also known as Oorang Terriers, larger Airedales, and Mountain Airedales. Now, I’m not quite sure if the Mountain Airedale nickname refers to their size or the fact that they love to go hiking up mountains. But I can attest to the fact that having had five larger Airedale Terriers, all of which have hiked up the Barker Way trail with me numerous times, they just love to get out and hike all the trails around San Diego. California Dog Hiking Danger

California Dog Hiking Danger – In the Danger Zone

California Dog Hiking Danger

Today about 10:30AM at Mission Trails Regional Park I saw the third rattlesnake for this year.  Hiking with my two Airedale Terriers here in San Diego, seeing rattlesnakes on the trails is common. The first on I saw was on the Barker Way Trail on Cowles Mountain, the second one was on the walking path around Lake Murray. So, today’s sighting was not unexpected. But, today, I made an almost fatal mistake that could have taken out one or both of my dogs. Read more »

Larger Airedale Terriers 360°

My two larger Airedales Annie and Teddy at the San Diego river where it goes through Mission Trails Regional Park.

Mission Trails Regional Park is about 5,700 acres and the largest regional park west of the Mississippi.

The river is not very wide here and in the summer, there is usually no water. This video was taken just after our Thanksgiving large rain storm and so there was quite a lot of water in the river and it was flowing quite fast. Read more »

Airedale Hike – Mission Trails Regional Park

Airedale Hike – San Diego Mission Trails Regional Park

Dog hiking in Mission Trails Regional Park at the river trail-head at Mission Gorge Road & Jackson Drive. This is a nice wide trail that goes down to the San Diego River. The river is usually dry in the summer. But, even with a little water, you can cross by going just a little west of the main crossing & avoid getting wet.

Now, the trail going up on the Tierrasanta side is steeper than the San Diego side, but, still easy. These trails are good for your dog especially late in the day, because they are mostly shaded from direct sun and they are really wide. Read more »

California Dog Rattlesnake

California Dog Rattlesnake – larger Airedale Terriers encounter usage rattlesnake.

This just occurred early September 2017 in Mission Trails Regional Park in the City of San Diego California.you are working lately. Mission Trails Regional Park youat approximately 5800 ac.²  is the largest regional Park this side of the Mississippi. There are a lot of great hiking and mountain bike trails going throughout the park.

I like to take my two mountain Airedale Terriers hiking here usually late in the day when the temperature is going down and we don’t have to go in the direct sun. So, it’s not uncommon that we see quite a few rattlesnakes. Just two weeks ago I saw rattlesnakes on three out of the five days that we took our walks. Read more »
